Still
Life with Roses is an extremely rare
and important example of a still life by Vedder.
Painted in 1868, Vedder already had taken
a studio at Montmartre, 12 bis Rue Trochet
close to Place Pigalle in Paris where this
work was more than likely executed. Albion
H. Bicknell in February of 1868 states "We
are heavy blowers for you. The Vedder stock
is still on the gain; it is considered the
best in the market". He quotes the painter
Thomas Robinson as saying, "One thing
we settled; that Elihu Vedder is the best
artist America has produced, be God"!.
In December of 1868, Carrie leaves for Rome
with Rose Stanford (her sister). It is more
than likely this Still Life with Roses, was
painted for Rose Stanford as a parting gift
or as an allegory of her. All works by the
artist have a direct relationship to someone
or something in particular. It was at this
time that Rose's sister Carrie had already
accepted Vedder's proposal of marriage.
