Roman
Compagna is a light and luminous example
of Vedder's work done circa 1860. This vignette
of Roman antiquity is common subject matter
for American artists of the time such as John
Gadsby Chapman and John Linton Chapman. This
is another work that the artist deemed important
enough not to sell and kept with him until
his death. In 1860 Vedder begins a friendship
with Thomas H.Hotchkiss who will sadly die
young at the age of 36. Also around this time
the artist begins to exhibit in Florence and
sells one of his works for 30.00 dollars and
is commissioned to paint a portrait of Kate
Field which he begins in June of 1860 and
finishes in August and receives 55.00 dollars.
