This
study titled Sunset over the Tuscan Hills can
remind one of the cloud studies by John Constable.
Although it is unlikey that Vedder would have
seen any works of Constable, it is known that
in 1858 he shared a studio with the English
artist, Mrs. Hay. Regardless of inspiration,
it's luminosity is astounding. The skill that
Vedder painted these works belies that the fact
that was only in his early 20's at the time.
The deft use of color, the highly unusual sight
line, so low on the horizon, tell us that he
was already a mature artist beyond his years.
